Whether you’re a seasoned theatre-goer or discovering the magic for the first time, step behind the curtain at Newcastle Theatre Royal for a special Open Day on Thu 17 Apr, 10am–3pm. This free event invites theatre lovers of all ages to explore our stunning venue, meet our team, and experience the magic of the arts. You’ll have the chance to chat with staff from different departments, visit the Box Office for tickets, and discover more about upcoming shows, memberships, and ways to get involved.
History Talks: Delve into the rich history of Newcastle Theatre Royal, from its opening in 1837 to the present day. Learn about Frank Matcham’s iconic redesign, explore archive materials, and take part in a Q&A session. Join the queue on the day. Talks last 1 hour.
Adult Acting Workshop: Unleash your inner actor in this hour-long taster session in our rehearsal room. Explore text, develop performance skills, and build confidence. Join the queue on the day. Workshops last 1 hour.
Theatre Tours: Go behind the scenes on an expert-led tour of our stunning theatre, from the grand auditorium to backstage areas where productions come to life. Join the queue on the day. Tours last 30 minutes.
Stage Demonstration: Discover how sound and lighting bring productions to life, from West End musicals to our annual family pantomime.
Fantastical Creatures: See the world through the intrepid eyes of children from Newcastle’s West End in this extra-special exhibition featuring recorded interviews, poems, artwork, and a specially designed soundscape in our Studio. Imaginings that are right up your street!
Craft Workshops: Get creative with family-friendly activities. Make your own masks, design badges, and decorate a theatre-themed tote bag to take home.
Egg Hunt: Explore the Theatre in search of hidden eggs, each beautifully decorated with unique, theatre-inspired designs.
Relax and Recharge: Enjoy refreshments while listening to live music from a professional pianist in the Grand Circle Bar. Or visit 100 Grey Street, our coffee and wine bar, serving delicious coffee, exquisite wines, and fresh cakes and pastries.

Our Theatre Tours give you access to the non-public areas of our three theatres, the Crucible, Lyceum and Playhouse, including the backstage and cast areas.
