Henry Irving Henry Irving

Born: 1838 (Somerset, England)

Died: 1905 (Bradford, England)

Sir Henry Irving was a well-known English actor-manager of the Victorian era.

Irving managed the Lyceum Theatre in London in partnership with actress Ellen Terry, in what may have been more than a purely professional arrangement at times.

The Exeter Theatre Royal fire of 1887 caused Irving to become interested in ensuring better safety for theatres and led to him developing the “Irving Safety Theatre” principles, whose general rules still hold true today such as dividing the auditorium from the back-of-house and ensuring multiple exits for every section of the audience.
