Overview

Cine Rex in Ghent, Belgium, was designed by Ghent based architect Geo Henderick and built/opened in 1933. Henderick was inspired by the Grand Rex in Paris. The cinema was designed in an Atmospheric style with a Moorish theme. The ceiling was a night-time summer sky with sparkling stars and passing clouds. The curtain, made of silver lily with light voile behind it, was highlighted with colorful floodlights while the most recent, mostly French, records of that time were played. Seating was provided in orchestra (main floor) and balcony levels. In later years the interior was modernized and the Atmospheric interior replaced with a more modern design.

Cine Rex closed on 16th June 1982, then reopened again at the end of 1982, and then closed for the last time as a cinema in 1985.

In the 1990s the cinema was used as the Capitole Casino. Since the mid-2000s Cine Rex has been disused and sits vacant. It is a listed building.
