Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz

Born: 1716 (Stockholm, Sweden)

Died: 1796 (Stockholm, Sweden)

Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz was a Swedish architect and civil servant. He was born in 1716 in Stockholm and was the son of the architect Göran Josuæ Adelcrantz.

Despite taking training as a civil servant, Adelcrantz demonstrated an artistic inclination and took lessons in drawing and design. In the late 1730s he traveled to Paris and Rome, and in Rome was given a position working on a palace construction project.

During the 1740s Adelcrantz worked on architectural projects in Stockholm. He came into his own during the 1750s when French Rococo was highly popular in Sweden, and one of his best known works dates from that time: Confidencen, the palace theatre at Ulriksdal.

Adelcrantz passed away in Stockholm in March 1796 at the age of 80, after spending his final days working as a civil servant while suffering from a debilitating cancer.
