Olivier Awards

Olivier Awards

The Laurence Olivier Awards, or simply the Olivier Awards, are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognize excellence in professional theatre in London at an annual ceremony in the capital. The awards were originally known as the Society of West End Theatre Awards, but they were renamed in honor of the British actor Laurence Olivier in 1984.

The first awards ceremony in 1976 was held at the Hotel Café Royal. Over the years the awards have been held at various venues and theatres across London, including several occasions at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The awards were broadcast on television starting in 1981, only broadcast on radio from 2004 to 2010, then returned to television starting in 2011.

In 2012 the awards moved to the Royal Opera House. From 2017 onwards the awards have been based at the Royal Albert Hall, aside from in 2020 when a slimmed-down ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic was broadcast from the London Palladium. There was no ceremony in 2021.
