The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards are presented annually, usually in London, to honor the best in film.
The inaugural awards were held in May 1949 at the Odeon Leicester Square. Information on subsequent years is patchy, however they returned to the Odeon in 1955-6. From 1968 until 1997, the BAFTA Film and Television awards were presented in one joint ceremony known simply as the BAFTA Awards, and in in 1977-9 the awards were held at the Wembley Conference Centre (now demolished). For some years in the 1980s (certainly 1985 & 1989) the awards were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair before moving to Scotland for 1990 where they were held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. In 1995 the awards were held at the London Palladium, then in 1997 the last joint Film & Television Awards took place in the Royal Albert Hall.
In 1998 Grosvenor House Hotel hosted the Film Awards, then for 1999 they moved to the Business Design Center (the old Royal Agricultural Hall) in Islington. In 2000-7 the awards were held at the Odeon Leicester Square, then moved to the Royal Opera House for 2008-16, and all subsequent awards have been presented at the Royal Albert Hall.
