The MTV Video Music Awards are commonly known as the VMAs and honor the best in the Music Video medium. They were originally conceived in 1984 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards for the music video categories.
From 1986-93 the award show was held at the Universal Amphitheatre (Universal City, CA), aside from 1992 when it was held at the Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles. In 1998 the Universal Amphitheatre was used again, before a move to New York’s Metropolitan Opera House for 1999 & 2001. In 2004-5 the show came from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, and in 2007 from The Palms in Las Vegas. In 2008 Paramount Pictures studios in Hollywood were used.
From 2010 onwards, large arenas on the US West and East coasts have predominated as the venue, such as the Staples Center and The Forum in Los Angeles and the Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden in New York. The Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles has also been used.
