Tony Awards

The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in New York.

The inaugural awards in 1947 were held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. For the next 20 years the awards were hosted by hotels in New York: the Plaza, the Astor, Hotel Americana, the New York Hilton, and again at the Waldorf Astoria. In 1966 the awards were held at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center.

From 1967 onwards the awards have been hosted by theatres. The Shubert, Mark Hellinger, Palace, Broadway, Imperial, Winter Garden, Gershwin, Minskoff, and Lunt-Fontanne theatres have all hosted the awards; see Wikipedia for the full chronology.

From 1997 to 2019 the awards were hosted at Radio City Music Hall, with off years at the Beacon Theatre. The 74th Tony Awards skipped 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and were presented at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2021.

The 75th Tony Awards returned to Radio City Music Hall in June 2022. In 2023 the awards were held at the United Palace Theatre, in an unscripted ceremony during the Writers Guild of America strike.

In 2024 the awards will take place at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
