The Hispanic Heritage Awards were established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in America.
Awards are considered among the highest honors for Hispanics by Hispanics. Annual awards ceremonies have taken place in Washington DC, with a gap year in 2012. Award ceremony locations prior to 2010 are unknown. The 2020 and 2021 ceremonies, during the Covid-19 pandemic, were held remotely.
