Cinema Tucsón: “Identifying Features”

Cinema Tucsón: “Identifying Features”

13th February 2022, 4pm

Identifying Features, a film by Fernanda Valadez. Mexico, 2020, 94 min. In Spanish with English subtitles.

The most lauded Mexican film of the year, winner of the Gotham Award or Best International Film, the Audience Award and Best Screenplay prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and nine Ariel Awards, Identifying Features tells the story of middle-aged Magdalena, who has lost contact with her son after he took off with a friend from their town of Guanajuato to cross the border into the U.S., hopeful to find work. Desperate to find out what happened to him—and to know whether he’s even alive— she embarks on an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous journey to discover the truth. At the same time, a young man named Miguel has returned to Mexico after being deported from the U.S., and eventually his path converges with Magdalena’s. From this simple but urgent premise, director Fernanda Valadez has crafted a lyrical, suspenseful slow burn, equally constructed of moments of beauty and horror, and which leads to a startling, shattering conclusion.

Backstage Tour

5th March 2022, 10:30am

Did you know that the Festival Theatre is situated on Edinburgh’s longest continuous theatre site? Or that it was once a Bingo hall? Want to stand on stage and feel like a star?

This backstage tour is a great chance to go behind the scenes; see the workings of the theatre and walk down memory lane as we chat through the theatre’s interesting history.

Tours have been adapted to current government guidance. The route utilises our spacious foyers, auditorium, and stage, and has been modified to leave out some of the most enclosed spaces in the theatre, without taking away from your experience. We kindly request that everyone adheres to government guidelines - please wear a mask unless exempt, follow guidance on 2m social distancing, and frequently use the hand sanitisers that we have situated throughout the building.

Refreshments are included. Tickets £10 (Friends of Capital Theatres receive £2 off).

Professor Brian Cox: Horizons

Professor Brian Cox: Horizons

17th June 2022, 8pm

World-renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox brings his immersive live experience, “Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey,” to North America as part of his 2022 World Tour.

“Horizons” takes us on a dazzling cinematic journey. A story of how we came to be and what we can become. The deepest of questions will be explored using the latest advances in our understanding of quantum theory, black holes, biology, planetary science, astronomy and cosmology. Using state-of-the-art LED screen technology, venues will be filled with images of far-away galaxies, alien worlds, supermassive black holes and a time before the Big Bang.

What is the nature of space and time? Why does the Universe exist? How did life begin, how rare might it be and what is the significance of life in the Cosmos? What does it mean to live a small, finite life in a vast, eternal Universe? “Horizons” is a celebration of our civilization, of our music, art, philosophy and science; an optimistic vision of our future if we continue to explore Nature with humility and to value ourselves and our fellow human beings. Brian will again be joined by co-host of The Infinite Monkey Cage and award-winning comedian Robin Ince, perhaps the only collection of sentient atoms in the observable Universe capable of overseeing a Q&A with an audience of 10,000 people while wearing an old cardigan.

June 17th and 18th 2022 at 8pm. Tickets $65.
