Academy Awards (The Oscars)

The Academy Awards, more popularly known as The Oscars, are awarded for artistic and technical merit in the film industry.

The first awards ceremony took place in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929 and lasted 15 minutes. Between 1930 and 1943 the ceremony alternated between the Ambassador and Biltmore hotels in downtown Los Angeles. In 1949 the Academy Award Theater was used, and for the bulk of the 1960s the ceremony was televised from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The awards were first televised in 1953.

The Kodak Theatre (now Dolby Theatre) opened in late 2001 as the permanent home for the annual Academy Awards and has hosted the ceremony every year since March 2002.

In 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of the 93rd awards – a very cut-down affair – were hosted at Union Station in Los Angeles, however several inserts were broadcast from the Dolby Theatre. The Academy Awards returned to the Dolby Theatre in late March 2022 with a somewhat socially-distanced audience.
